Calorie and Weight Loss

What is Calorie?

Calorie that we will talk about is the food calorie which is capitalized as Calorie to distinguish it from the chemistry calorie, however, this capitalization is rarely observed in practice.

The Food Calorie

calorie intakeNutritionists measure the energy content of food in "calories" (sometimes capitalized and abbreviated as Cal or sometimes C, or abbreviated kcal as if small calories were being used), where each food calorie represents 4,186 joules. This is equivalent to 1000 of the calories used in chemistry, and thus the food Calorie would be called a kilocalorie if small calories were being used. However, in chemistry calories have been deprecated as a scientific unit of measure in favor of joules, and therefore in common modern usage the word "calorie" usually refers to a food calorie.

This situation provides two ways of talking about the amount of calories in food which look quite different but that express the exact same amount of energy. One may say that dietary fat has nine kilocalories (kcal) per gram, while proteins and carbohydrates have four kcal per gram, or, one may say that fat has nine Calories per gram while carbohydrates and proteins have four Calories per gram.

That whose body weight places them into the obese category is obviously seen from the outside. But what about the borderline overweight? Is that ten pounds over the ideal weight raising your risk of health complications? Are you just 'big-boned'?  Do you fall into overweight category?  How do you decide if you really need to lose weight - and how much you need to lose?

.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

The body mass index, or BMI, helps clarify an important distinction between being overweight or being obese. If you weigh too much, you're obviously overweight. But if you have a very high proportion of body fat, you're obese. Generally, the BMI will accurately reflect your weight and proportion of body fat as a function of your height and weight when categorizing you as healthy, overweight or obese.

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the BMI "describes body weight relative to height and is correlated with total body fat content in most adults". It is generally an accurate representation of muscle-to-fat ratio, though there are some limitations.

  • It may overestimate the BMI of an athletic person, because muscle is denser and weighs more than fat.

  • It may underestimate the BMI of an older person, or others who have low muscle mass.

How Water Help to Lose Weight

The question remains: what does the water do to help you in reducing weight?

waterhelptoloseweightAs you might say, water blocks out hunger more similar to ephedrine, the substance in fat reduction pills that makes the person curb her appetite by being able to repress the urge to eat. However, water works in a different way. Water does not curb your appetite alone instead, it satisfies your hunger, deceiving it to feel that it's already stuffed. This is known to bury a person's pressing need to eat.

Water, in fact, is a key component in a popular 3-day diet plan circulating on the internet, where the person will be required to fasting in 3 days, taking in nothing but water during that period. Water is expected to supply the nutrients that the person should receive, at least for the 3 days involved in the program.

Muscle Building Tips for Fat Loss

Many women are under the impression that any type of weight bearing exercise will bulk them up - adding too much muscle. In fact, the opposite is true. Muscle building for fat loss is possible, and adding muscle will, in fact, help your body to burn fat more quickly. Adding muscle to your frame helps you to secure a lean, toned appearance. You'll be stronger, and more flexible.

When practicing muscle building for fat loss, it is key to remember that you may not lose weight as quickly as with cardio alone. However, you are burning fat more quickly.  Muscle has weight, too, and you are replacing fatty pounds with muscular ones. However, if you are overweight, your weight will still drop. In either case, your percentage of body fat will drastically decrease, and you will lose inches from your hips, thighs, and waist.

When you decide to add muscle building exercises to your daily routine, start with a low amount of weight and a high number of repetitions. When you see those big bulky guys in the gym lifting weights - they're doing the opposite. For bulk, you'd want a high amount of weight, lifted a few times. Low weight, high reps will lead to long, lean muscle and an overall toned appearance.

As you practice muscle building for fat loss techniques, it is still important to eat healthfully. Working out in the gym and then going home to load up on cookies and chips is unhealthy, and unproductive. Remember, it is much easier to avoid calories in the first place than it is to burn them once you've eaten.
